| Beryl Eaton, a former chairman, secretary and very active club member, passed away on the 14th April this year. She was the only lady member of our Club ever to have been our chairman, and older members will remember that when asked on her appointment, how she wished to be addressed, she firmly replied, “Madam Chairman”. There can be few other Model Engineering Societies, if any at all, who have had a lady chairman, so this may have been a first in our hobby.
It was at that time that I first came across Taunton Model Engineers. Beryl, with her husband, David, were regulars at the public running events in Vivary Park. I was in the Park, one day, leaning on the fence just watching the trains when my wife called to me and said, “Give this man (David) a fiver”. I remember thinking, “Oh dear, what has she bought now ?”, but after dutifully handing over the money I was informed that I had become a member of Taunton Model Engineers. That evening Beryl and David brought my membership card to me at home a real mark of their enthusiasm for our club. During our exhibitions at St Augustine of Canterbury School, Beryl organised the catering. She was renowned for her bacon sandwiches and other delicacies and ran the kitchen area with a rod of iron. She was also a lady of many talents, having made at least one Stuart engine and was also an excellent seamstress. She could be seen working at our exhibitions on a rather grand dolls house, intricately painting its fittings. The club has lost a loyal member of many years’ standing. Our sympathies are extended to her husband David, her son Roger and her grandson Daniel. AC |
