| Since the second week of January, the Vivary Park Track has seen a great deal of activity with work taking place on the track extension. So far the weather has been kind to us quite cold but with no wind chill and substantial progress has been made.
Especial thanks must go to Maurice Hartnell for his off-site work in producing over sixty concrete columns and to Mark Hartnell for cutting up and machining dozens of hard wood sleepers. Taunton Deane Council has “come up trumps” for us in providing a Back-Hoe Excavator, equipped with a Post-Hole borer which has made life so easy for us. Holes were bored very quickly on our previously marked locations. What a contrast this was when compared with the work that we did all those years ago when the holes for the existing track were all laboriously dug with a hand auger! The team that worked under the direction of Maurice Hartnell installing the posts became an efficient unit in mixing and supplying concrete as was required though Barry Baxter must have been aching when he got home, reflecting the tremendous amount of physical labour that he especially did in this task. On the second work day, with the first phase of post installation completed and the concrete set, a second team started fitting the wooden cheeks to those posts whilst the first gang continued with the installation of further concrete posts. At the time of writing this early February the initial timber work is nearly completed and we hope to start laying the rails very shortly. Working parties continue on Thursdays and Sundays. Please come and help us whenever you can. I hope that the following pictures and those on the covers will give you some idea of what we have accomplished. With my thanks to everybody who has participated. |
