2008 Edition – Summary of Changes

1. Small Boilers exemption – now maximum 3 bar-litres v.1.5;

2. Check Insurance cover as it may impose additional limitations—no special requirements included within the Club’s insurance.

3. New Boilers to be inspected at least twice during construction – commercial boilers built post 31 May 2002 must carry CE marking;

4. Steel boilers of 500 bar-litres and over to be dismounted and cladding removed at 7 years but Inspector has discretion to extend to 10 years (recording reasons), and to inspect without dismounting if all surfaces can be examined with cladding removed;

5. All boilers to carry a unique, indelible identification number which is visible when installed;

6. Boilers of 10 bar-litres or less need only have one water feed if two are impractical.

We have also identified a possible problem. For new boilers “water gauges must be fitted independently of other fittings including the manifold” – in a number of model and prototype traction engine designs the top gauge is connected to the manifold. This requirement prevents adherence to prototype design.
